The Mountain Medicine Course experienced the Alpine Centre Avoriaz again!

The International Mountain Medicine Course in the Czech Republic was this year dedicated for the mountaineers.

Enthusiastic group of Czech and Slovak mountain leaders, ski-patrollers, guides and alpinists successfully accomplished the Course, which runs under the support of the ISMM, ICAR and UIAA MedCom.

4 Basic Modules held in Jizerka (Czech Republic) in September 2018 were followed by 2 Alpine Modules.

The winter training took place in the amazing alpine centre Avoriaz (France) on March 22-24, 2019 and it was organized in close cooperation with the local Ski Patrol Service SERMA and the Mont Blanc Helicopteres Air-Rescue Company.

The Course’ director and organiser Kristina Höschlová was happy to introduce the Czech and Slovak Rescuers to her former colleagues from Avoriaz.

Course for MOUNTAINEERS – “TRAUMA” and farewell

DAY 4 – “TRAUMA IN REMOTE ENVIRONMENT”

The last day presented a conclusion of acquired skills of the previous 3 modules.

Mountaineers should learn how to handle with traumatic injuries if far from the medical facilities.

They learned how to reduce luxations and fractures and how to make improvised immobilisation.

Afterwards, they were divided into small groups and should deal with different scenarios dispersed in the mountain terrain. Also the guys from Mountain Rescue of Jizera Mountains joined us for this training.

  

      

The ambiance of whole the Course was great and joyful, that more it was so hard to say good bye and wait till March 2019 to meet again in Avoriaz!

Course for MOUNTAINEERS – “The COLD”, “1st AID” and “Helicopter Rescue”

DAY 2 – “The COLD”

Cold related medicine issues were presented during 3 interactive lectures including several practical videos:

  • Hypothermia and Frostbite (Kristina Höschlová)
  • “ABCDE” examination of an injured person (Jirka Chvojka)
  • Avalanche Rescue (Iva Sikulová)

           

The day was concluded by a simulation of avalanche victimes triage, though so far from the snow and cold (:))!

Practical Avalanche rescue training is planned for the Alpine modules in March 2019.

 

DAY 3 – “Non traumatic EMERGENCIES and HELICOPTER RESCUE”

In the morning, the participants were trained in making diagnostic of non-traumatic medical emergencies.

Jirka and Kristina instructed the mountaineers:

  •  how to recognise life threatening situations
  •  how to organise a rescue mission
  •  and how to cooperate with the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service)

Later this day, during the visit at the HEMS station of Liberec, the group had a great opportunity to induce these skills in practice.

In the evening, Ondra Metelka from  Singing Rock company presented some useful climbing and mountaineering materials. Singing Rock is one of the Mountain Medicine Course partners. Later this evening Renda Mašín, the head of Jizera Mountain Rescue, presented the function and cooperation of the Mountain Rescue professionals.

Course for Mountaineers – EXPEDITION and CPR

DAY 1 – “EXPEDITION”

Jana Kubalová started with a perfect interactive presentation about altitude sicknesses followed by other expedition medicine issues presented by Kristina Höschlová and Jirka Chvojka.

High mountain environment was simulated by several videos presenting the altitude related emergencies as well by a practice in telemedicine.

 

     

It was our great pleasure to welcome about 10 of our former DiMM graduates which joined the group for the weekend and gladly participated in the educative program.

Each of them simulated a “Doctor on Call” giving consultation to the alpinists asking for help.

In the evening, Lucka Langová presented with a lot of humour the principles of Basic Life Support.
